Founded in 1936 and being located in West Suffolk’s Upper Stour Valley, Clare Bowls Club (CBC) welcomes beginners and experienced players to its outdoor flat-green lawn bowls arena (with 4 rinks).
The bowls club is within the grounds of the Clare Social Club and has ample parking nearby.
Between April to September roll-up sessions are usually held on a Wednesday evening, from 6.00pm onwards for informal, casual, or general practice. Additional sessions can be arranged for general play (e.g., Sunday Fundays), or to prepare for matches and competitions in the local Steeple Bumpstead Bowls League (SBBL).
CBC members enjoy lawn bowls in a relaxing and friendly environment.
Bowls is known as 'chess on grass,' a game of precision and strategy, where the bowls (or 'Woods') are weighted, or ‘biased’, so they curve toward a white bowl called 'the Jack' (i.e., the target), making every shot a test of both skill and nerve.
The primary objective is to make sure your bowl or bowls finishes closer to the Jack than those of your opponents’. A point is awarded for each bowl that is closer to the Jack than an opponent's best bowl.
Bowls is a fantastic low-impact way to stay active, combining gentle exercise with sharp mental focus.
In addition to casual play, the club is in the local bowls league and some members' participate in competitions.
New players / prospective members are welcome to join a roll-up to see if Bowls is for them. If you do not have your own Bowls, a set of Bowls and basic tuition will be provided - All you will need is a pair of flat shoes (e.g., treadless canvas shoes or soft-soled plimsolls)!
